Blue Dice of Shame

One of the funny gaming superstitions/traditions that I have encountered is the "Blue Dice of Shame". Originally thought to be something we did in our group alone, I began to encounter this tradition in other gaming groups removed from our own. These encounters occurred at conventions and games stores and I began to wonder how this happened.

For us, the Blue Dice of Shame were a set of tattered, light blue, casino-style D6s. They were chipped, rolled funky and generally the unwanted bastard children of somebody's dice collection, likely picked up sometime back when they scavenged dice for their early gaming experiences. They were most often assigned to players unfortunate enough to forget their own dice when coming to the table. This sort of hazing encouraged mindfulness and provided a sort of bonding ritual for us guys. The blue dice could also be sentenced upon somebody for some sort of gaming misstep (forgetting snacks, being late, forgetting to wash for the third day in a row, etc.).

I am curious if anyone else out there has Blue Dice of Shame or other table traditions they would like to share.

  1. New one on me but I do like the sound of it!

  2. We have a translucent gold-flecked d20 referred to as "Golden Boy". He is only allowed out at the most critical of junctures. His task is to roll wildly high or low, which he does with great aplomb. Much hilarity typically ensues.

  3. Well seeing that (most) of my past gaming Buddy's were and are pretty much shameless we really had nothing to point that out but, we do have silly hats....)

  4. Very creepy. I have a tub of chessex dice in white, yellow, red, pink, black, and... blue. And honest to God, the blue ones are cursed. I mean, my friends refuse to use them. They are notorious. Incidentally, they all fight over the yellow ones. Thankfully, I'm not superstitious ;)

  5. Not heard of this one before. However, I refuse to use white dice as they are generally cursed (no matter standard D6, scatter dice, block dice) – I never roll well if I have to use white dice. Given that this is the likely outcome should I forget to bring my own shiny dice… I never forget!

  6. At my table we allow one mulligan per game sessions, per player. But it must be rolled with my 3" solid black d20. It usually tumbles into drinks and miniatures, wrecking havoc. And I loan out a set of clear dice, that seem to roll like crap for anyone but me.

  7. I have a jar of loaner dice. Since no one in my group had yellow dice, I purchased a pile of yellow dice and those are my loaners.
