I'm a life-long gamer, both RPG and miniatures, and over time I have had to learn how to balance between my life/family and my hobbies. To this end,I have found there is much fun to be had in what I like to call "budget gaming". Now, that is not to say that I never spend any money on gaming stuff, but I do like to find ways to stretch the dollar and will showcase as many of those ways here, as I can.Eli Arndthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10445801567500822187noreply@blogger.comBlogger835125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3441824499938029576.post-10140787870338021582022-07-13T10:36:00.003-07:002022-07-13T10:44:40.205-07:00Gonzo Sci-Fantasy - Running and Playing It - Equipment and Monsters<div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjOxtn-6nV-JSa6Wy2S-O0jGGFniycww_mtJDPo8RCGBMzbW9zFhfhPZG7Fkvaq1Sp1QJ35W1vQpwvmE1G77_Z7NCxqfOn6ac1mlcQBSVEyUsfKKTc0orSFcJ7zafCNi5vV2rLR6NCZfmnAp_5WAV3jq-GYS3AfLo_36KGxpO6uCGJGsoiuBqE_mUxM" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="761" data-original-width="564" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjOxtn-6nV-JSa6Wy2S-O0jGGFniycww_mtJDPo8RCGBMzbW9zFhfhPZG7Fkvaq1Sp1QJ35W1vQpwvmE1G77_Z7NCxqfOn6ac1mlcQBSVEyUsfKKTc0orSFcJ7zafCNi5vV2rLR6NCZfmnAp_5WAV3jq-GYS3AfLo_36KGxpO6uCGJGsoiuBqE_mUxM=w185-h249" width="185" /></a></div>Hello All,<br />
<br />
Welcome back to this second post about gaming Gonzo Sci-Fantasy. Last post I went over a brief description of what it is. This post will focus on some basic guidelines for equipment and encounters in this settings.<br />
<br />
Running this sort of setting as a game is not all that hard unless you are trying to imitate the tropes of a specific series of books or shows. Most fantasy RPG classes, weapons, monsters and abilities are all present in Gozo Sci-Fantasy completely unchanged or with some minor tweaking to the flavor text. These settings still have warriors, rogues, casters and other such archetypal elements though the origins or exact natures of their powers may be different. For example, a paladin or cleric is a bit harder to explain if your world does not have actual gods though this may just mean that these characters tap into a different energy source than wizards or are simply not present with wizards taking over all casting roles. It might even be possible to have your "divine" casters tap into some sort of new secret power source that is wholly unknown to most and may as well be a "god".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
EQUIPMENT<br />
Weapons and equipment often exist in these settings unchanged in function but with a different character. Simple materials such as steel and iron are often given new names or replaced by convoluted names like "plasteel" or "armorite". Their effectiveness in the game remains mostly the same. What we do often see is a proliferation of weapons and defenses with magical effects, making the whole setting a bit more high powered. A warrior might wear a suit of armor that is defended by "magnetic sealing" that gives it extra protection, working much like magical armor. This is easy enough to do by just subbing in appropriate magic items from the lists and giving them those snazzy names. Other items might actually provide spell like effects and as such items such as "shield bracelets" or "climbing gloves" can simply be designed as a simple item with a built in spell effects and a number of charges available before it must be recharged or reloaded with a handy dandy power pack.<br />
<br />
There should be little concern over making such items available to PCs from the start as it is certainly a guarantee that the threats will rise to meet them and their enhanced capabilities. Anything they can do, the bad guys can do better (until they fail).<br />
<br />
MONSTERS AND ENCOUNTERS<br />
Most encounters in this sort of setting are pretty much the same as fantasy RPGs. A group of heroes find themselves in a dangerous place facing the local dangerous inhabitants. One of the main differences is that I have found is that the encounters are often in their own lands and not just dungeon squatters as they are often portrayed in RPGs. This is not universally true but when you are fighting the Centaurpedes you may very well find yourself doing so on their home turf. Creatures are often depicted as minions of a greater power or monstrous beasts which are often unbeatable, often needing to be simply stopped or avoided rather than defeated outright.<br />
<br />
Monsters are often caricatures of humanity with some feature enhanced to make them seem bestial, more enlightened or just plain weird. Robots and cyborgs are also popular themes in this genre along with hybrid creatures. These themes are often encountered in varying mixes in creatures as well. It is not strange thing to encounter a robotic minotaur, dragon, or giant and using the statistics of such creatures with minor modification should be no great task. Add some armor and damage capacity and immunity to mind-effecting abilities and you have a pretty straight forward robot monster.<br /><br />Another element that factors in, especially in the cartoons of this genre, are traps. Villains in gonzo universes love to throw death traps at the heroes. Such traps are often convoluted and elaborate, providing the heroes plenty of opportunity to figure them out and escape. Spikes, energy fields, horrible substances or timed bombs. Power draining effects seem particularly popular methods of menacing heroes.<br /><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello all,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's been a bit since I blogged on gaming in general. Life has taken over and I am pretty sure that blogs have been relegated to a bit of an old guard status, replaced by Facebook groups and YouTube channels but as I started here, I thought I would revisit this realm of communication to begin talking about some things that have come to mind for RPGs, miniatures and gaming in general. To start this return, I would like to talk about gonzo sci-fantasy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the sort of fantasy that really used to the be the norm back in the days when I first started gaming. Fantasy itself was a lot more wondrous and over the top and hadn't learned to take itself so seriously. But this form of fantasy went a step further and intertwined itself with science fiction. Worlds built on this foundation were full of odd mash-ups of knights on robot horses, ray-gun wielding folks clad in strangely medieval garb, or laser word wielding barbarians. Monsters were often simple, odd-ball and a bit goofy. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sometimes it was as simple as adding a techno prefix or suffix to and existing medieval/fantasy word or crushing together two words to make strange compound words. This was most frequently done when naming equipment and creatures as it provided an instant reference point for what such a thing was. In cartoons of this sort, these combos were often as blatant as they sounded and seeing the critter on the old 480p TV screen after school or Saturday mornings left zero question what it was. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some of the best examples of this from my own childhood and recently, thanks to Netflix, my adulthood are cartoons such as Blackstar, He-Man, She-Ra and, Thundarr the Barbarians even Thundercats. These shows were masters of "punny", forced, literal combinations of words and concepts into some memorable bits. I recall fondly wielding a broomstick as Thundarr's Sun Sword and battlling imaginary foes that were odd robotic versions of mythological creatures or wacky hybrids. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the early days of RPGs these things were not foreign to players and we saw much of this sort of fantasy bleed over into D&D and even more so Gamma World. Whole adventures such as "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" was a D&D adventure that through the party into a crashed spaceship where fantasy and science fiction collided. Meanwhile, Gamma World often presented technology in the hands of post-apocalyptic savages as magic, indistinguishable to those people from true mystical abilities. The presence of psionics is another note of science fiction in fantasy as psionics or psychic powers have a long history of being magic explained as science.<br />
<br />
So, there you have it. A brand of fantasy that was, for many of us, part of a splendid, wondrous childhood that has since gone to the wayside. It's fun, it's forgiving, and it is pretty simple to do. In my next post in this series, I'll look at some ways to run such a setting using tools you already have available in your existing collection of RPGs.<br />
<br />
Take care,<br />
<br />
And get out and game.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
While technically not an entire league, I wanted to post this latex adversary paint-up. This is a plastic stone or claw golem miniatures from the Reaper Bones line. I have cut it from its original base to help with an issue in how the plastic legs were positioned and re-based it. This is a simple paint job with a brown base coat, yellow sand wet-brushing, then a washing with brown tone from Army Painter, over which I did a drybrushing of a lighter sand color to highlight. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Figures such as these are indispensable for Pulp Alley. They can pop up everywhere from tombs to desert ruins or even in the ranks of villainous leagues. They are also great for museum scenarios, art galleries, rampaging through the city after being mistakenly awakened. There just aren't enough uses for an animated statue. This particular miniatures is extra useful as it is quite generic in it style and could easily be placed in any number of cultures.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's been a bit since I dipped my brush and got some color on my way too big collection of pulp miniatures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This latest duo is made from a modified Copplestone Miniature and a chimp from a company that escapes me at the moment. These two should look quite familiar to anyone who grew up reading the antics of a certain inquisitive simian and his mustard-hued caretaker. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The newer Pulp Alley league rules allow players to make leagues as a small as two characters. This is great for players on a budget or looking to get into the game with minimal painting or miniatures purchases. It also allows players to field those famous dues, dynamic and otherwise, that are such a solid part of the genre. I think for this league I'll write the ape up as the leader.</div>

So, it would appear that I missed a few posts on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/GGStarEagle/">Star Eagles Facebook</a> while I was attending to some family business. This has led to me posting updates a bit out of order. Things are returning to normal for me, so I should be able to keep up but please enjoy this post regarding how Fighter Activation works in Star Eagles. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><b>FIGHTER ACTIVATION</b></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>Those already familiar with other Ganesha Games such as Song of Blades and Heroes or Galleys and Galleon will already have some familiarity with the basic of how unit activation works, but STAR EAGLES has some notable differences. </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>When a ship activates, it will have an opportunity to move, attack, and perform other special activities such as scanning. Everything a ship does in Star Eagles is called an action. There are three types of actions; free actions, normal actions, and reactions.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>Free actions can be performed without using any pilot actions and are primarily just basic movement and basic turning. Normal actions require the use of pilot actions and these include advanced manoeuvres, shooting, launching missiles, scanning and other activities. Reactions are opportunities the pilot may have to take an action outside a ship's normal activation as a result of enemy activity occurring nearby. </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>When a Starfighter has an opportunity to activate it may choose to roll dice to get pilot action points to spend during its activation. The number of actions it gets will be determined by the Pilot's quality and the amount of risk the player want to take when activating. The controlling player may choose to roll 1,2, or 3 dice. The players choice. Each dice that rolls equal or higher than the pilots Quality rating provides one action point for the ship. These points will be spent during the ship's activation to perform 'normal' actions. Dice that roll below the quality of the pilot are called an activation failure. If a player rolls two or more failed dice during an activation, the opponent may take the initiative if he doesn't already have it or draw a COMBAT CARD.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>COMBAT CARDS are highly useful tools which I will explain in a later post.</i></span></div>

Ganesha Games continues to shed light on the the system for their upcoming Star Eagles space fighter combat game. Following the coverage of movement in my last post, I wanted to share their own words on how initiative works in Star Eagles. The pic below shows the lovely range of ConStar light, medium, and heavy fighters.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">Today I am going to talk a bit about how initiative works in STAR EAGLES. Tomorrow I will explain what happens during a fighter's activation. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">INITIATIVE </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">When a mission is created, one player will start with the initiative as dictated by the mission. The player who has initiative has the power to choose which player will next activate a ship or group of ships. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">Having initiative is important because that player will control the flow of the battle. A player will keep initiative until it is taken away from him by rolling a TURNOVER(explained tomorrow when discussing the activation) or having the non initiative player damage one of the initiative player's ships. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">It is quite possible for initiative to go back and forth during a turn and also possible for a player to retain initiative during the entire game(although extremely unlikely). No matter who has initiative, all ships will eventually have a chance to activate in a turn, having the initiative just allows some control of when they will activate. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: orange;">This system creates a very dynamic battle and creates a lot of tension between both players. The Initiative player must decide how aggressive he wishes to be during his activation, pushing his pilots too hard may result in making mistakes and losing the initiative. The non initiative player must be aggressive if he wishes to take control of the battle.</span></i></div>

Hey all,<br />
<br />
So Ganesha Games has moved beyond teasing us with pictures of the amazing ship miniatures for their upcoming Star Eagles space fighter combat game and started sharing some of the concepts behind their rules. While these are still in the playtest stages, they are pretty solid and show us how dynamic the system plans to be.<br />
<br />
The words and pictures below are from their post on their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/GGStarEagle/">Facebook group </a>and I have posted the original text to preserve the integrity of their commentary - something I shall be doing with any of their more detailed release information.</div>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b><b>Movement and Maneuvers in Star Eagles</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">When a ship activates it will have a number of pilot actions between 0-3 (See Activation post here for how pilot actions are determined…) it must then builds it maneuver. Maneuvers are built by linking a series of movement sticks to form the flight path of the fighter. Using this method, a wide variety of movements may be made without a great deal of complication or advanced calculation and it creates a visual representation of the flight path.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">There are three types of movement sticks;</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">The process is very simple;</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">1) Take a number of Normal Movement Sticks equal to the ships speed. An average speed is three, meaning it will start with three normal move sticks.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">2) ALL movement sticks MUST be used</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">3) A normal move sticks may be ADDED or REMOVED by spending one pilot action for each stick added or removed. This is called using an action to thrust or burn retros</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image may contain: text" height="320" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-5.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/17022399_10212219150294349_4287826437594369082_n.jpg?oh=364d97bf648a6022aed6a4e78adebe21&oe=5973ADCF" width="276" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">4) Advanced maneuvers may be purchased with Pilot actions as follows</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">a. A SIDESLIP cost one pilot action and replaces ONE normal move stick</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">b. A TIGHT TURN costs one pilot action and replaces TWO normal move stick</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">c. A REVERSE TURN cost two pilot actions and replaces TWO normal move sticks</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #e69138;">5) Once you have decided how many and what type of sticks to use, just lay them out to form your flight path.</span></i></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
More news on the development side of Star Eagles. A great preview of the cover art depicting a S'Sekai Drake vs ConStar Eagle. This is not yet finished and we are told the finished piece will be much more of a full-on battle scene with more going on in the background. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No automatic alt text available." height="350" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-5.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16807020_10212131834551510_2243864685450367262_n.jpg?oh=da29c23759c4b96b476268ef981c2d1a&oe=594718AE" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There have been a number of pictures put out showing the ships in comparison to one another and we have received yet more. The above picture shows a formation of ConStar ships - a Concord, escorted by two eagles and an arrow. The image below shows S'Sekai and ConStar light and medium fighters next to some fighters from X-wing. This is a nice scale as it allows a bit more detail and will make a collection of ships all the more impressive.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No automatic alt text available." height="275" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-5.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16807578_10212122902648218_1992206000807369927_n.jpg?oh=c126f7c22206490fd37ed0d5a59c75f3&oe=5944FE8A" width="400" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are also getting some news on the Proxima Centauri designs as well as some of the larger ships. Seen below are the Alpha Dart medium fighter and Alpha Cobra light fighter along with the ConStar Osprey gunboat. I am thrilled by the concept of larger gunboat style ships..</div>
<br />
<img alt="Image may contain: food" height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-5.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16807560_10212122596760571_4901133609888263759_n.jpg?oh=50974b8461e8f8f128736062f7b12ff8&oe=592C39DF" width="381" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last note is on the play test pics that have been released. These show the dynamic movement and maneuver system and we have been provided ith some insight into how skilled maneuvering can get into good positions (second below). It has also been revealed that missiles will have a tracking time in which targeted ships will have a chance to react to them, adding another level of tactical fun.</div>

<span style="color: #e69138;"><i>"The S'Sekai fighter in the middle successfully pulled off a reverse turn manoeuvre behind the ConStar medium fighter. <img alt="No automatic alt text available." height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16730484_10212066278192642_1552073045707675752_n.jpg?oh=50edcc1d74471a5a4dea3f4bbbe64e6b&oe=594AD956" width="300" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello All,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Star Eagles news eeps rolling out as Ganesha Games moves toward their Kickstarter for their ambitious new space fighter combat game. Every reveal makes me want more and more for this game to be out already, but alas I (and you all) will have to do with teaser, pre-production chatter and snippets until then.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the coolest reveals, as far as background for the stock setting goes, is the colored image of the S'Sekai. Admittedly, I had guessed at what these guys were going to look like based on the name and the ship designs but I am happy to have my suspicions confirmed. The S'Sekai fit the bill of 80's alien menace.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No automatic alt text available." height="300" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16602813_10212064258582153_1362981275639681916_n.jpg?oh=343fc6317eb87eba6a833de35efcdce9&oe=5901F1F0" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other news, there has been some discussion of the movement mechanic, showing how the movement sticks will be implemented. It has been revealed that gradual turns will be easy to perform, but for true maneuvering, pilots will have to engage in a bit of risk with more complex maneuvers including side-slips and high-G turns. It has also been revealed that the game will utilize only D6 (six-sided).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image may contain: night and text" height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16711495_10212070277612625_3924013753732153615_n.jpg?oh=03db9c5c0b8bffcad11c2c4397ceb40e&oe=59029676" width="233" /> <img alt="Image may contain: text" height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16711858_10212070277652626_8498959305267256564_n.jpg?oh=078297fcfe23f3e679f35357dce6ba42&oe=5935663A" width="233" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have also been treated to more mocked up fighter cards. The most recent set (above) show us the light fighter for ConStar and the S'Sekai. Some discussion of the features of these ships revealed that "Nimble" and "Very Nimble" are abilities that make it harder to target the ship while it is jinking about (this does negatively affect the jinking ship as well). Afterburner will provide temporary speed boosts to ships that are normally slower, something that ConStar uses to counter the S'Sekai superior speed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image may contain: text" height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16682029_10212060420806211_8982074781760707844_n.jpg?oh=d0088d421ffd9620101e06756ed34a53&oe=59381C4A" width="233" /> <img alt="Image may contain: 1 person, text" height="400" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16508997_10212060420846212_4461691898348561222_n.jpg?oh=55925294f4717294566ae1959ec47469&oe=593A7416" width="233" /></div>

<img alt="No automatic alt text available." height="388" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16508711_10212054047486882_333261100165514675_n.jpg?oh=4f6447d42d686fbe340ef56e8561c79b&oe=593AA337" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A recent post on the Star Eagles Facebook Page revealed a set of ships and game components planned for use in an upcoming playtest game. While they revealed nothing about the game rules these simple components say much about the intentions for this game.<br /><br />Pre-measured sticks are a staple of the Ganesha games but new to the panoply of play elements. Damon Richardson, did say that the maneuver sticks will allow movement options with great maneuverability in mind. It was also revealed that 3D missile markers for each of the missile types in the game will be a thing. This all suggests a very dynamic game with missiles tracking around and fighters juking and jinking around .</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello all,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Long time no post, but something pretty amazing came across my sensors, that I just had to share.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ganesha Games, famous for its "Song of" titles among others, is working on a new fighter combat that tickles me right in the childhood. Clearly rooted in the classic scifi space fighter combat genre of the 70s and 80s this game promises to bring something fun and fast to the tabletop.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OWzVTVSbnZA/WJ9L-ffrjMI/AAAAAAAAa6E/l02qn2TN6qEelVl7t6j6r8N_SxbxIhg5ACLcB/s1600/16266325_10211927355119652_6742906138175310275_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OWzVTVSbnZA/WJ9L-ffrjMI/AAAAAAAAa6E/l02qn2TN6qEelVl7t6j6r8N_SxbxIhg5ACLcB/s320/16266325_10211927355119652_6742906138175310275_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the core of the game will be a rule book and a set of miniatures for their stock universe. The ships, representing the ConStar (Earth and its Colonies) and the S'Sekai aliens will be professionally produced from 3D printed renders and then turned into highly detailed resin models.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The images below show some of the designs that have been revealed for both the ConStar and S'Sekai. Both forces will have a variety of light, medium and heavy fighters. Larger ships have been hinted at as well and words such as "gunboat" and "corvette" have been bandied around.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzWIybjT4y4/WJ9L-orJ8pI/AAAAAAAAa6I/Csx2SZvD944suNO9nV_Q_T16UxzgNCiaACLcB/s1600/16681694_10212038908748423_8869675914285281294_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzWIybjT4y4/WJ9L-orJ8pI/AAAAAAAAa6I/Csx2SZvD944suNO9nV_Q_T16UxzgNCiaACLcB/s400/16681694_10212038908748423_8869675914285281294_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
If the beautiful miniatures are not enough, the system has some pretty awesome goals in mind. Besides providing a system that plays up to around 12 a side with fast play and details, Ganesha is going to provide a full construction system for the game that will allow you to add new or customized fighters to the game or build your favorite universe from TV and movies. What's more, I have confirmed that the stock ships from their built-in universe are made using the construction system, so we will not have a game where you creations will never measure up to the ships that came with the game. This is also extremely useful if you are trying to design variants or your own ships to fit into the universe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Not much has been revealed about the mechanics, but two sample mock-ups for potential craft have been revealed. While not finalized designs or format, you can see that there is the possibility for a wide variety of design elements, even in a simple format. You can also see the difference in design philosophy between S'Sekai and ConStar. </div>

I haven't been working on this project much as sculpting is taking hat time I have, but I was at the </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
craft store with my wife and decided to wander past the wood craft section. Frustratingly, they seem to have changed their supplier and in doing so also changed what items they carry. I'm sure they have market reasons for this, but it has meant that it is harder to find more of the parts I started the project with. What I have found are some new shapes that were not out before. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I picked up some packs of shapes that looked like they would fit in with the project. Some of the resulting hull shapes are shown below. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="360" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15036536_10154002664898062_5982249405477145462_n.jpg?oh=56618671801d1e754f24d38030add34f&oe=58BFD81C" width="640" /></div>
<br />
These ship hulls are made up of two pieces and form a nice shape. I have them sitting on the flat end as the disk at the top is slightly rounded on one side. The bulk would be consistent with some sort of light cruiser. regardless of which direction I orient them they will have ample space for bow weapons.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="360" src="https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14993582_10154002673618062_5865650941847098895_n.jpg?oh=222996010607a8d7c8d23ad9c51e47e2&oe=58BA229C" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next two examples make use of different sized spools. I had initially avoided spool shapes because they were just too straight, but they are a great way to create a large area for greeblies and weapons systems. The one on the left is definitely another light cruiser while the one on the right is closer in size to what I have been building as destroyers, maybe even a little smaller. The right-hand example makes use of one of the plastic dome beads I had been using as turrets to break the flat ended spool shape. Both have rounded tail ends so they are sitting on handy model parts for the purposes of the picture.</div>

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-27vkeSZnfAU/WAd6uzEUmzI/AAAAAAAAY1c/mFvTsP92jXoq_FYo652xbanCK3A-uASKACKgB/s1600/20161011_173305.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-27vkeSZnfAU/WAd6uzEUmzI/AAAAAAAAY1c/mFvTsP92jXoq_FYo652xbanCK3A-uASKACKgB/s400/20161011_173305.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
No, this is a real miniatures game. It's an insanely good one at that. A skirmish level game with tons of fan support, playtesting and a living community, "This is Not a Test" (TNT) combines elements of many classic iterations of the post-apocalyptic adventure setting. Heavily influence by Fallout it is much more than that and you can find nods to Road Warrior, horror movies, even classics like Gamma World.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While written with 28mm in mind, TNT works perfectly well for 15mm and other scales. You can successfully play it in 15mm without even adjusting ranges, the distances will just seem a bit more real scale. The game has its own growing range of 28mm miniatures but the rules showcase a range of miniatures from several manufacturers proving that this game will allow you to get started with many of the miniatures already in your collection.</div>

<br />
Posting this news few days late but I figured it was worth sharing nonetheless.<br /><br />A while back I backed a Kickstarter for "Imperial Skies" a new VSF airship combat games written by that wonderful chap Robin Fitton who also brought us Gruntz 15mm. As soon as Robin announced the project, I was on board. His success with Gruntz 15mm was proven and I wanted to be in on the ground floor for this new game which happened to have the added bonus of being made in collaboration with Brigade Models and their extensive range of VSF airships.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Eu8ndyuUlmQ/V6Klqj5JCAI/AAAAAAAAXVk/1sLJ4MwE8agpmFoMlwNRg08vc7vxzsSpwCLcB/s1600/13902554_10153725423203062_6918790285224448798_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Eu8ndyuUlmQ/V6Klqj5JCAI/AAAAAAAAXVk/1sLJ4MwE8agpmFoMlwNRg08vc7vxzsSpwCLcB/s320/13902554_10153725423203062_6918790285224448798_n.jpg" width="175" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1KPU7ze1m2o/V6Klqj2BLTI/AAAAAAAAXVo/65B8jwhXBUcuv6eTMrbatTu_vpyvGo2XgCLcB/s1600/13907204_10153725374388062_6286932167263693971_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1KPU7ze1m2o/V6Klqj2BLTI/AAAAAAAAXVo/65B8jwhXBUcuv6eTMrbatTu_vpyvGo2XgCLcB/s320/13907204_10153725374388062_6286932167263693971_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So, July 30th, I received two gifts from the UK. The first was a tasty treat in the form of a Kinder Surprise egg. The other was my copy of Imperial Skies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Imperial Skies impresses right out of the package. The cover is wonderfully thematic with striking cover art that announces exactly what it's all about. The interior is nicely formatted and laid out in a such a way as to be truly instructive not just on the rules of the game but the feel of the universe, the hobby and the craft of it all. Robin even include quite an extensive section on how to make the most of your gaming pieces with quite a few suggestions on how to take them extra mile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2g2dfHG6cx0/V6KqOfWIQwI/AAAAAAAAXWA/waORa3rL9-IP-VFos49pO2MVNZlmw4mawCLcB/s1600/imperial-skies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2g2dfHG6cx0/V6KqOfWIQwI/AAAAAAAAXWA/waORa3rL9-IP-VFos49pO2MVNZlmw4mawCLcB/s320/imperial-skies.jpg" width="227" /></a></div>
<br /><br />After all of the rules and extensive examples, you also get full construction rules for those who, like myself, love custom ships or who may want to build fleets not in Brigade's colossal range of ship models which are full rendered in statistics for Imperial Skies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<br /><br />I have only scratched the surface and already I am eager to build my fleet(s) and start to expand on the game.<br />
<br />
Give it a try!<br />

<br /><br />A bit of an update on the spaceship project.<br /><br />I recently received my exploratory order from<a href="http://www.ravenstarstudio.com/">http://www.ravenstarstudio.com</a><br /><br />These ships are from his Retro range's Earth fleet. I like the style of the ships and their sleek, supersonic age lines. The counter the powerful but bulky looking ships,of my scratch built fleet.<br /><br />I have them arranged here in a general approximation of equivalency. I was not able to order all of the ships from Ravenstar's Retro Earth range, so there are some gaps.Eli Arndthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10445801567500822187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3441824499938029576.post-43099829455485532682016-06-25T07:45:00.003-07:002016-10-19T06:52:00.862-07:00Scratchbuilding Spaceships - Out of Control DesignsIt seems the more I go on with this project, the more ship designs I come up with. As of the writing of this update, I have designed no less than ten (10) different styles of ship ranging from battleship down to frigates and escorts.<br />
<br />
I have yet to fully detail any of the designs and have only duplicated one of them. The techniques used in their construction have been evolving as I go on and gain confidence with the materials I have at hand and what works and doesn't.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
While designing a cruiser as shown in the first picture, the rear part of the hull came off. Unexpectedly, it looked rather nice that way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Without the rear section, the cruiser looks a lot like a smaller version of the battleship (also pictured). So, now I have to decide if I want to reattach the rear section or keep it as it is.</div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
The project continues...</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
After a couple of setbacks involving an unfamiliar brand of spray paint, I lost a couple of completed ship models. A light cruiser I had modeled up was trashed but will work for a wreck. The battleship, a brand new design for me, was toast beyond salvage. </div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
I have now rebuilt the battleship as well as a dreadnought design. After getting a handle on the new paint, I managed to get it work rather nicely for the models and so I now have all the ships in their red fleet color. Detailing remains but I have decide on whether these will be human or alien vessels and what sorts of markings they need.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So in my side project to create my own scratchbuilt retro 70's style space fleet, I have started from smallest, working my way up to larger designs. After designing a frigate and two destroyer class vessels, I now venture into the bigger ships - a light cruiser.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This one was a bit more involved as I found myself challenged by the larger open spaces and a need to fit heavier weapons to the design. This design incorporates a substantial bow missile launchers, two medium cannons on separate turrets and four light cannons mounted primarily for defensive purposes.<br />
