Art Books and Video Games

Hey all,

Like many, I am posting the holiday roundup for this year.

This year's holiday yield included nothing in the hobby gaming category. While much of what I received is certain inspirational and related and a geeky, extended family sort of way, not a single die or adventure supplement was to be had.

Don't think I didn't appreciate what I did get, though and what I did receive was very nice. I received a video game i had been looking for - "Borderlands". I have purchased this game twice as a used copy but neither worked and this year i finally got a hold of a new copy that works fine.

The other items, the ones that were really nice were some art books (pictured above). Oneo f them was the impressive art book for Elysium. not only is this book full of great concept art, but the text really illustrate why Niell Blomkamp is a much a real film maker and an artist. I mean, come on, recruiting real tagger and graffiti artists from Mexico city to do the graffiti designs on his sets and props. Talk about legit.

The Halo 4 art book features some really spellbinding concept art for character and environments. It doesn't feature much in the way of vehicle or weapon concept, at least not in comparison to the other Halo art books I have read, but it's still wonderful.

Nuthin' But Mech is a nice sampler of concept art from various artists and a great way to check our to see who is doing what so I can seek out more of their work.

  1. I've got a Halo encyclopedia? art book? can't remember but I love it, that particular universe has a lot of appealing sci-fi goodness in it. Speaking of appealing, the Elysium art book is something I'd like to get my hands on as well. As for Borderlands, better late than never! It's one of my more favorite console titles, just for the style (art, humor, story, creativeness) it's awesome. Cheers man!

    1. The Halo Encyclopedia is a great book. I got that earlier this year along with another Halo art book and a Mass Effect book as well.

Borderlands is great but between my daughter playing Skyrim and wife playing Oblivion I'll be lucky to touch my console again this year.

  2. Hello Eli,

I own the Nothing but Mecha book along with many others but not those other two. Enjoy the three. I found the film Elysium to be a bitter let down. A lot of promise but a plot so thin and daft it jarred all the way through.

    1. While not the best plot, I thought Elysium was still worth seeing. If nothing else, Blomkamp's vision is reallt cool.

  3. I will give you that but the film is powerful weak. The plot is tissue thin. It was a let down to me.

On another note I posted a thread on TMP about a sci-fi novel and its 15mm gaming possibilities that are a bit better to me: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=331013

  4. Oh, trust me. I shot the think apart on the car ride home and my wife agreed.

As an example, there are so many simpler solutions to the problems presented in the movie that are possible within the framework of the world as prsented in the film.

Unfortunately, the message of immigration law and class separation blinded Blomkamp to some of the technical issues with his story.
