This is Not a Test - A Kickstarter to bring a Real Book to a Real Game

I discovered "This is Not a Test" quite by accident and have very much become a real fan. The game is the brain child of Joseph McGuire who developed and play-tested the game all the way to professional layout and the start of his own miniatures line over several years. The game has gained traction and loyal followers and now he is trying to bring the game to print in a hardback volume.

Red Ops: Asylum Kickstarter

Mike Renegar of Rebel Minis fame is running a Kickstarter for a new 28mm skirmish game set in a rough, nasty setting of the Asylum - an island prison of sorts where you must fight for survival.

Kickstarter Alert - Stars of Empire

This looks interesting. I am not in a position to back the project at this time but it seems worth mention and I thought I would spread the word.

I must admit that I am intrigued by the concept of "hard scifi Victorian science fiction".

Marine Tactical Unit - 15mm Scale Miniatures

Painted pics from White Dragon Miniatures new Kickstarter

Mark Stone of White Dragon Miniatures posted this pic of a painted version of one of his Marine Tactical Unit infantry alongside the massive, amazing Proteus Frontline Battle Mech. The render images of these were incredible enough, but this superbly painted example of the machine really shows it as the business.

This mecha, along with the MTU troops and their support Armadillo Support bot are part of a run away Kickstarter that promises some delightful stretch goals including an alternate Proteus with a railgun.

Grimtooth is Back!

Alright gamers, listen up!

You old school folks out there remember Grimtooth - that evil troll that made GM's far too lethal for their own good and gave us all nightmares about losing our favorite characters in the most despicable and horrifying ways. Well, he's back in a new Kickstarter bringing all the original works together in one place.

I've already jumped on board to support this project and I know at least few of you who want, dare I say NEED, this book.

The Invasion Continues - Yan'drassi Invasion Kickstarter Update

Hey folks,

I wanted to post an update on my Kickstarter and all the amazing work being done by the sculptor, Sean Bullough and concept artist Todd Ulrich. These two guys have been doing a great job of bringing my vision to life and ultimately to gaming tables.

Sean's latest WIP of the Neeks, Tavshar, and Horgosi along with their weapons shows just how diverse and cool this project is.

Todd Ulrich, the pen behind the original concept art for the Yan'drassi as well as the coor art at the top of this post has always been faithful in bringing my rougher drawings, written descriptions and frantic emails into professional concepts that can be translated into miniatures. Below is the concept he came up with for the Tavshar Gun Skimmer, the second stretch goal for the Kickstarter.

Loud Ninja Games - Yan'drassi Invasion Kickstarter

I realize things have been a bit quiet on the ol' ISLP blog of late. One of the reasons is my budding miniatures company - Loud Ninja Games. We just launched our second 15mm science fiction Kickstarter project.

What I Have Learned About Producing Miniatures

One of the cool things about gaming that is bigger now than it ever has been before is the ability of just about anyone to get into the biz. This has its pros and cons and certainly not everyone is cut out for it and not everyone's stuff is polished to the same degree. That is not to say that the less polished is somehow bad stuff, it just means that often critical, useful and sometimes necessary editorial steps may been skipped. This is true for printed works, but also extends to other gaming media. In my case, this is miniatures.

When I first set out to be a sculptor, I really had no grand aspirations of having my own line of miniatures and even when I did, I decided to enter the commercial realm of miniatures using contracted sculpts that I felt better represented my ideas to a degree that was, in my opinion, beyond my ability at the time. I do not regret this initial decision though I have reflected on its effect on my dedication to learning the art. But what does this have to do with what I learned about the miniatures business? A lot really.

My original plan was to contract for two packs of 6 different poses, which would have allowed for the basic elements of any combat squads. This was a reasonable starting point, I thought. I found a sculptor that did good work for a price I could afford and worked out a deal with a caster that I knew. This was falling into place and I was well within a reasonable budget for my finances. It all looked like smooth sailing.

It turned out that I tapped my sculptor's talent right as he was about to make a serious shift in his personal life. This stuff happens and I could hardly fault a guy for trying to better himself and his family's situation. He's a person and still an amazing talent that I hope to some day tap into. I tried to give the sculpts some time but eventually I had to pull the plug on that work and find a new sculptor. Finding a new sculptor wasn't all that hard and I soon had the initial sculpts for the Chuhuac back on track but then I ran into another snag in my personal life that really set me back, so much so that I entertained, and finally went through with running a Kickstarter for the miniatures.

I feel the Kickstarter went well, overall, but I have to admit that my lack of experience in the industry really set it up for all the problems that came out of it. I was new to KS and felt that I needed to pad the campaign with all sorts of stretch goals and discounts to attract backers. While this worked, it escalated the scope of the project beyond my original agreement with my caster and taxed my sculptor. I could have, and likely should have stuck to the original plan, had faith in the quality of the idea to attract folks to it. This would have prevented it from growing in the monster it did and would have saved me a lot of stress and anguish.

Flash forward to after the campaign and into the production and fulfillment process. This period was a lot of wondering and stressing and having to adapt. We had issues with the sculpts when they went to molding. I had to modify master casts so they would work for production casting. Add to this that we had to change what type and how much metal was needed for the project. Heck, just getting the over 100 pounds of metal from the UK to me cost a good chunk of cash. This is where I really learned the most.

During the process of actually getting the miniatures to production, I took in a ton new knowledge. In addition to technical details, I had to realize that none of this stuff went fast. Mold makers and casters are often piled under work and it can take time for your turn to come up. Then there is always the possibility that things might not go right in the mold. Many problems will only emerge once you have attempted to mold the sculpts. It really pays to have an expert look over your sculpts before you send them for production. A good caster will catch most issues before they go in.

So, moving on to after the Kickstarter is done and gone. What is there left to learn? Well, for one there is marketing and such. This is where it can be hard as an independent producer. I have ZERO advertising budget and so have to rely on low cost or free outlets. This can work, using blogs, Facebook and Google + as communications outlets. There are also a lot of hobby news outlets who will pick up on your material for free, but you have to keep the releases rolling for them to do so. This last part brings me to my biggest marketing realization.

Since the Chuhuac have gone into general release, sales have been less than I would have hoped. There was a bit of a push when they first came out but sales dwindled fast as the months went on. Part of this has to do with the lack of new releases. Now, I realize it seems odd to talk about new releases after having just dropped an entire range of troops, support and other elements into the market. The truth is that most of the immediate market was accessed by the Kkickstarter and with the Kickstarter having dropped everything into the hobby's lap all at once, there was an initial buzz and then...tumbleweeds.

The Kickstarter actually left me in debt. Despite having generated thousands of dollars and even getting a financial shot in the arm from family, I still could not cover the full cost of the Kickstarter which came out to something around $10,000. This meant that I wasn't in a position to invest in new projects to keep the ball rolling. Going back to the original plan for the Loud Ninja Games start up, if I had released the two packs and then rolled those sales into new development, I could have kept up a semi-regular series of releases that would have established a market for my figures and built the LNG name up. Instead I came into the world screaming and kicking with a mixed bag of emotions and then pretty much went silent.

So, here I am. I have a full range of miniatures released that are barely selling and currently no way to get new items to market. Even if I could get the greens by sculpting my own, I cannot get them into production until I am square with my casters. This is where hobby craft might come into good use. Displaying my product in use by others and showing off my own paint jobs of my product. The problem here seems to be that, despite there being 125 people out there with my product, only about four have posted any images of their new toys to the internet. This is not a complaint, but it certainly doesn't help with exposure. I do not have a local outlet for 15mm science fiction gaming and so posting my own game pics is difficult if not impossible.

Soooo... key points.

  1. Consider taking it slow and steady. Consider your release schedule and how it will build your brand.
  2. Do not take a Kickstarter lightly. It is a lot of work and can go horribly wrong.
  3. Get as much info up front and make your move only when you have all the details you can get.
  4. Pick your vendors (sculptors, casters, etc) widely.
  5. Stay hands on. Inspect, ask, bother, bug and otherwise make a pain in the ass of yourself with all your vendors.
  6. Advertise, show off and otherwise figure out how to market your products. Give them away to some convention goers if you have to.

Look at the Bones!

Reaper Bones II Kickstarter Enters its Final Day.

With just 30 hours remaining at the time of this posting, Reaper's newest Kickstarter campaign is proving to be a great success. While not the out of control train that the first one was, this second Kickstarter is more thoughtful, viable and still every bit as lovely.

For those of your have been holding off, waiting to see what comes out, now is the time to pitch in. Not only will you make sure to get your hands on what is already there, but the added pledge funds will only make this monster grow. New stretch goals are being unlocked all the time, both in the Core Set and the three Core Expansions that have been opened up (Core Expansion One did reach it's final goal).

So if you haven't pledged in yet but are planning to, or you haven't updated your pledge to include those add-ons you wanted, get on and do so. They have a great pledge manager that makes it easy to figure it all out.

Let's kick this thing into over drive on this last day!!!

Thanks,

-Eli

Reaper Bones II Kickstarter!

I am sure many of you have already heard, but I figured it was worth getting the news out as much as I could. Reaper Miniatures has released a new Kickstarter that continued the juggernaut that is their Bones range.

I should start by saying that the initial core set of figures is a generous lineup of useful Fantasy and Pulp denizens. They have also color-coded their release art so that you can easily recognize what is associated with what -

  • Purple = Core Set.
  • Orange = Add-Ons.
  • Gold = Core Set Expansion Set #1

The image below shows the current (4:14 PM 10/1/2013) lineup including expansion unlocked from stretch goals.

Now, if you made it to the bottom of the image, there is more news. This Kickstarter is a much simpler approach than their first Bones was, having taken a queue from some of their experiences there. There is really only two ways to enter in - $1 and $100. This means you can jump in just for the add-ons ($1) or ride the wave of freebies with the Core Set ($100).

In addition to this though, a second stream of stretches has been introduced with Core Expansion Set #1. What this does is allow you to add-on $50 to your Core Set pledge and get a large group of add-on minis that will also expand as the campaign grows. You can still add-on individual add-on sets as well, but this allows Reaper to be generous without breaking the bank.

I think they are handling this really well so far. The growth has been mind-boggling and the speed of updates is indeed the product of many posts ready to go at a moment's notice with so poor team riding keyboards and gulping Red Bull to make sure it all goes smooth.

I'm in for $150 so far.

Let's keep the fun rolling!!!

In it to win it!

Soooo....ya. I really like the looks of All Quiet on the Martian Front and couldn't be happy just buying enough to build one side. So, I upped my pledge and took advantage of the Early Bird Full Assault level - $245. May seem like a lot but look what all I get PLUS the various Stretch Goals that get unlocked.

But look what all I get at that level...

I am in this! - All Quiet on the Martian Front Kickstarter is Live!

Well if you have been anywhere online in gaming circles you likely know that the All Quiet on the Martian Front Kickstarter went live today. I couldn't pass this one up and while I'll likely have some 'splanin to do, I put in at the Tank Major level -

Even if you are not so much in it for a new set of rules, the miniatures alone should pull you in. an amazing array of machines and new 15mm troop figures are being offered in this project and I know i'll be putting mine to double duty in other weird war games and possibly even fighting 15mm Quar for sort of oddball retro-scifi games.

So...

They Have Returned to Wage War Again...

I am looking forward to this. I like what the designers have done expanding on the themes and updating the timeline. The models looks really cool and it looks like the line will be pretty extensive and a sure favorite for folks who like strange machines with an early 20th century feel or tripods.

The Kickstarter goes live May 7th and I know I'll be there!

Ghosts of Hefei Kickstarter

The Department brought us a new way to play 15mm science fiction miniatures games, allowing players to run through an investigative process while also engaging in action packed scenes of chase and combat. Now, the creators of The Department bring a new chapter to their universe in The Ghosts of Hefei.

"Ghosts of Hefei (GoF) features a competitive tabletop miniatures game experience where rival gangs battle to steal robot workers in a dystopian, near-future Earth. A direct sequel to Four-Color Figures' recent game, The Department, GoF focuses its lens on the action and drama transpiring on the mean streets of 2070s Hefei, China.

Players take command of a gang with the purpose of stealing fabricants (fabricated human simulants) to sell on the black market. These gangs act as agents for the major global organized crime syndicates. Players use a combination of hacking, guile, and combat to compete for money and influence in the lucrative and dangerous international fabricant trade."

The Ghosts of HefeiKickstarter is moving along strongly and with ten (10) days to go it is already 2/3 the way there. Whether you are interested in the universe of The Department and the rules systems it's generating or just want to see some cool new street level 15mm scifi minis come onto the market, join me in backing this project.

The Good Bad News About the Centoid Kickstarter

Photo-full

In an odd but cool turn of events, the Centoid Kickstarter that I posted about just yesterday has been cancelled. Before arms fly in the air accompanied by guffaws of disgust, the reason for this is that the Centoids attracted the attention of a third party who has purchased them to put them into production. While this third party has yet to be named, this means that the appeal of this project was so appealing that the need for a Kickstarter campaign was rendered completely  unnecessary.

Adam, the sculptor and creator of the campaign, has promised an update on who this third party ASAP and as such I shall relay that information to you all then.

As I said, the news is bad for the Kickstarter campaign, but good for the range of Centoids.

Take care and have fun,

-Eli

Alien Centoid Kickstarter From Adam Gayford (Ended)

Photo-full

Back in the the early days of my wargaming life there was an awesome race of 28mm aliens that thundered across many gaming tables. Hard to find in the USA, I never saw more than a hand full of them myself and those I did were often conversions from the one or two poses that seem to trickle in to local shops. Well sculptor Adam Gayford has resurrected these majestic beasts in his own style and with a bit of an update.

On 11/8/2012 Adam launched a Kickstarter campaign for a massive onslaught of 28mm saurian centaurs he has dubbed Centoids. These figures will be cast in a remarkable plastic resin with many options and interchangeable torsos and lower bodies. Weapon variations are part of the plan as well as some big hitter like something called a "Juggernaught"  and there are even whispers of a tank and APC.

If this sounds like your sort of monster, then bounce over and throw in. Show Adam's vision some love and get yourself some new bad boys (or good guys) for your battlefield!

So cool I had to show it off here too!

Jared Blando did the above rendition of the Chuhuac attack bikes for the range of 15mm miniatures I'm developing for my company Loud Ninja Games. I think it is dead sexy and with the Kickstarter campaign for this project over the halfway mark, it seemed the perfect piece of spice to jazz up the stream of announcements and updates.

Hope you like it,

-Eli
