When The Navy Walked or Why I'm a Bad Gamer Buddy

Hello all,

It's time for me to do something I should have and was supposed to have done a while back. Some of you who read the blog the Armchair General blog will already know that Rob over there is working on his own set of VSF rules called "When the Navy Walked". These are his own ambitious labor of love and he's already released a version for PDF purchase over at Wargame Vault.

Now, I have to admit, that my involvement in this product is a little on the lesser side than I might have liked. Rob did approach me to do some art for him but I didn't feel that my skills and style were up to drawing VSF machinery and so I passed. I have provided some design ideas, brainstormed, and helped with concept work, but for the most part I'm just a casual helper on this.

What Rob has done with WTNW is to try and update the typical VSF storyline to a little later in history than it usually gets played. It's my understanding that he's saddled it around the early 20th century and so is going for less of a Victorian feel to his world. He's got Mars in the setting (to be detailed in a future supplement) and has populated it with all manner of species very much like a Burough's type Mars.

Give it a check and let Rob know what you think.

Thanks,

-Eli

ArmChairGeneral: When the Navy Walked - Core Rules Released!

When the Navy Walked is a miniature rules set that covers an alternate history from the 1872 Victorian era to the 1909 Edwardian Industrial Age. It is a springboard for imagination and a high-level game of tactics and battles set amongst the 'what if' world inspired by the classic authors of Victorian Science Fiction and Retro Science Fiction.

ArmChairGeneral: Rorkes Drift VSF Final

ArmChairGeneral: Rorkes Drift VSF Final

Yesterday we played Rorke's Drift all the way through to its completion! My playtesters helped me add some interesting elements to this alternate scenario including a native cannon battery that was helpful in defeating the steambots of the British. Here are some pictures. The British were played by my Dad and the Zulu Impis were played by Ray.

This introductory scenario for When the Navy Walked on Rorke's Drift will be available soon for download from Wargame Vault.com! As always, I welcome comments and feedback.

The initial positions of both forces.

The Zulu UDloko Iklwa sneaking up behind the kitchen and ovens. The British line this part commanded by Bromhead is ready and reinforced with a steambot.

Check out the rest of the battle over on Armchairgeneral1!

ArmChairGeneral: To Tripod or not to Tripod

My good buddy Eli over here at I see lead people and I have been discussing the finer aspects of Victorian Science Fiction today. Specifically we have discussed what is and what is not considered to be true Victorian Science Fiction. I am sure many of you remember the old War of the Worlds book written by H.G. Wells back in 1898 as the two part novel seriesThe Coming of the Martians and The Earth Under the Martians. Some have called the book a variation on evolution interpretation while others consider the book sheer romantic science fiction. The War of the Worlds has spawned a 1950s movie, a spin off television special, several made for television movies and the Hollywood Tom Cruise War of the Worlds. In either event many agree that this book along with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth were the springboards for the Victorian Science Fiction genre and later the Steampunk movement itself.

ArmChairGeneral: VSF Venusians

Apparently I am on a painting spree today! I hope I can keep this up! Up next are some arachnid warriors from StarShip Troopers which I intend on using for that plus Venusians for my VSF and Pulp games. I was inspired by Avatar pictures and scenes with the blue color of these creatures. I have yet to see the movie. You cannot tell but I actually used Bleach Bone on five of the creatures and pure white on another five. They were painted dark blue and then drybrushed turquoise before the claws, teeth and sharp pointy bits were painted.
