15mm Prang Sculpts WIP

Hey folks,

Just a quick update to show the progress on the Prang sculpts I'm doing for 15mm.co.uk. These froggy aliens are really starting to take shape with their hodge-podge equipment, numerous pouches and sacks and lumbering bodies.

I've started adding weapons to a couple of them, a process that is proving educational and tricky, but seems to be coming along just the same.

Shown below are front and back of a Prang trooper, the beginnings of a plasma cutter-equipped breaching trooper in heavy armor, and a picture of the new leader fig to go with this batch.

What a Piece of Junk...

Well DUH!

It's supposed to be.

Another project that I am working on right now is a post-apocalyptic protected dwelling. Designed to represent a shelter and strong point made from scavenged bits of metal, wood, fencing and such, this is a large dwelling that could easily house a few families in tight quarters.

The building is constructed from various bits of scrap. Old Warhammer spell cards provided the majority of the individual pieces which were glued together with pieces of balsa and other plastic and card bits over a basic framework of bamboo skewers. The were glued in a haphazard manner suggesting a hastily built shelter put together by folks who might not  be the best at construction.

To make the structure more useful for miniatures games, I added a shielded balcony structure from which defenders could repel attackers as they clambered up the rocky mound of rubble upon which the structure is built. The are to the right of the balcony will be fenced in to provide a yard for livestock as well as providing a fenced impediment to attackers.

On the side opposite of the balcony is a crude portcullis style gate above which is an open fighting platform from which the gate can be scrutinized and defended. Windows and loopholes between the wall panels allow for additional visibility and firing ports.

The roof is removable to allow for placement of figure in the upper floor. The mast in the center of the structure will be given a lookout platform to finish the design. Additional details will be added as I get the pieces but I plan on adding wire fences and defensive barriers that will channel attackers. Additional pieces of rubble will also be added to taste.

I'll show more pictures as the project progresses.

Alien Servitor Sculpt WIP

One of the really fun pieces in this new batch of sculpts is a huge alien humanoid of considerable mass and might that I am designing as a sort of big dumb servitor type. Though he's nowhere near finished a lot of the character of the figure is already taking shape.

His legs and lower body are rather thick and his skin is wrinkled and loose on his legs, his paunchy gut contained only by the cloth wrappings that preserve his decency. His broad back spreads to the shoulder of his massive, primary arms that can also double as walking limbs if he should wish more stability or load-bearing capacity. Not shown yet are the two smaller secondary arms that will be dangling from under her forward bent torso.

His face is vaguely reptilian, and i have chosen to sculpt a scar across his face and broad mouth to show the hard life he has lead (one too many strikes with a master's gaff). That mouth will get some broad, flat herbivore teeth and the eyes will be sculpted small and beady. I haven't decided as to whether or not I want to adorn his head with any sort of horns, ears or not. I am tempted to give him dangling ears, but those might clutter the secondary arms.

What's on the Table Now?

With my second batch of minis having been release through 15mm.co.uk's SHM line, I'm hard at work completing several new sculpts and starting a few others for future submission to SHM. Displayed above is a collection of science fiction sculpts I have on my table at this time.

You will notice there are more armed figures in this batch than in past batches as well as some familiar faces among the new ones. There are two new Prang in there as well as a Vergan warrior. You will also notice a few figures that are non-humanoids in there. Two are large alien beasts that will originally be cast without any sort of gear or tack on them. I hope to make equipped versions of them to act as sci-fi pack animals or mounts. One of these figures is based on a drawing by my 8-yr old daughter.

You will also see a couple figures in there  from the group of figs I am doing of civilian heavy space suits, industrial exoskeletons and such.

Hopefully all of these will be able to be molded and cast for you enjoyment in the coming months.

Heavy Space Suit Sculpt

Just so folks don't think I've dried up and blown away, I wanted to post one of the sculpts I am working on.

This one is being done along side some of the other work I am doing. Any time I am sculpting, I usually have several projects going at a time. This keeps me from getting bored and helps keep my ADD tendencies on a productive track. It also helps with the necessary downtime between steps on other sculpts.

I am going with the themes of a heavy duty space or environmental suit with built-in servo enhancements allowing for heavy lifting and load-bearing. This is the sort of suit you might find operating heavy machinery in a hostile environment or lugging around mining equipment on Alpha Proxima IV.

The sculpt is still in the rough right now and there are some places where the details could be sharpened up some. Also, my camera never does these things justice and considering the pictures are three to four times the size of the actual figure, that isn't surprising.

Not sure what route I'm going to go with this project, but we'll see.
